The Church of the Beatitudes on the Mount of Beatitudes above the Sea of Galilee

Mount of Beatitudes: Guide to the Sermon on the Mount

The Mount of Beatitudes is the gentle hillside above the Sea of Galilee where, by long tradition, Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount and spoke the eight Beatitudes. With its quiet gardens, its graceful domed church, and one of the most beautiful views in the Holy Land, it is one of the most beloved stops on any Christian tour of Galilee. This guide covers the history, the church, the famous view, how to get there, and everything you need to plan your visit.

What is the Mount of Beatitudes?

The Mount of Beatitudes is a low hill on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, between Capernaum and Tabgha, on the slopes of the Korazim Plateau. It is the traditional site of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, the teaching that opens with the eight Beatitudes recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, each beginning with the word "Blessed." You can read the full text of the Sermon on the Mount for the background. The spot has been honored by pilgrims for more than 1,600 years, and a Byzantine church once stood lower down the slope as early as the 4th century. Today the hill is a peaceful place of gardens, olive trees, and sweeping views over the lake.

The Church of the Beatitudes

The graceful Church of the Beatitudes that crowns the Mount of Beatitudes was built in 1938 to plans by the Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi, who designed many of the Holy Land's most loved churches. Its octagonal shape is deliberate: the eight sides represent the eight Beatitudes, which are inscribed around the upper windows inside. A covered walkway rings the building, framing views of the lake from every angle. The church is cared for by Franciscan sisters, and the surrounding gardens are kept beautifully, making the whole site feel calm and contemplative.

The view over the Sea of Galilee

For many visitors to the Mount of Beatitudes, the view is the highlight. The hill sits a couple of hundred meters above the lake, so from the gardens and the walkway around the church you look out over the whole northern basin of the Sea of Galilee, with the hills of the Golan rising on the far shore. It is easy to understand why this gentle natural amphitheater is remembered as the place where crowds gathered to listen. Early morning light is especially lovely for photographs.

The Sermon on the Mount

The Sermon on the Mount is one of the most famous passages in the Gospels, and the Beatitudes that open it are among the best known words in the Christian tradition. Standing on the Mount of Beatitudes where they are remembered, with the lake spread out below, gives the text a setting that many pilgrims find deeply moving. Whether you come as a believer or simply with an interest in history, the connection between the words and the landscape is striking.

How to get to the Mount of Beatitudes

The site sits just off Route 90 on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, a few minutes from Capernaum and Tabgha and about 15 minutes from Tiberias. From Tel Aviv or Jerusalem it is roughly a two to two and a half hour drive, which is why most visitors come on a guided day tour of Galilee that links the holy sites along the lake. There is a parking area at the top, and a modest entrance donation is requested.

Our Christian Galilee tour visits the hill alongside Capernaum, Tabgha, and the other sites around the lake, and the Nazareth and Sea of Galilee tour pairs the Galilee shore with the town where Jesus grew up. To plan the wider area, read our Sea of Galilee guide and our Capernaum guide.

Best time to visit

Spring is the most beautiful time, when the gardens and surrounding hills are green and full of wildflowers, though the site is rewarding year round. Mornings are quieter and cooler, and the light over the lake is at its best early in the day. Summer is hot in the Galilee basin, so bring water and sun protection. The church and gardens can get busy with tour groups in the middle of the day, so an early start helps.

What to know before you go

This is an active religious site, so dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and keep voices low inside the church. A small entrance donation is requested, and there is parking at the top. Wear comfortable shoes for the gardens and walkway. Bring water and a hat in the warmer months. Allow around 45 minutes to an hour to enjoy the church and the views without rushing.
