Manger Square and the Church of the Nativity lit up at night for Christmas in Bethlehem

Christmas in Bethlehem 2027: A Local Guide to Midnight Mass, Manger Square and Christmas Eve Tours from Jerusalem

Christmas in Bethlehem centers on Manger Square and the Church of the Nativity, where crowds gather on 24 December for the Latin Patriarch's arrival and the Catholic Midnight Mass at St. Catherine's Church. Seats inside the church are limited and are handed out in advance through church channels, so most visitors follow the service from the square. The easiest way to go is from Jerusalem with a guided Christmas Eve tour that handles the transport, the checkpoint and the late ride back.

What Christmas in Bethlehem is really like

We take guests to Bethlehem all year, but Christmas is different. The town fills with pilgrims, local Christian families, scout bands and news crews. Manger Square, the open plaza in front of the Church of the Nativity, becomes the stage for almost everything.

A Bethlehem Christmas is a religious event first. It is not a European Christmas market. If you want shopping and mulled wine, other cities do that better. If you want to stand near the place Christians honor as the birthplace of Jesus on the night it matters most, nothing else compares.

It helps to know there are really three Christmases here. Catholic and Protestant churches celebrate on 25 December. The Greek Orthodox and other Eastern churches celebrate on 7 January, and the Armenian church in the Holy Land celebrates later in January. This guide focuses on 24 December, because that is when most international visitors come.

Be aware that celebrations can change with the situation. In 2023 and 2024, Bethlehem's churches scaled public festivities back to prayer services because of the war in Gaza, while the Midnight Mass itself still took place. Always check the program for the year you travel.

Christmas Eve in Bethlehem: how the day unfolds

The day usually follows a long tradition. In the early afternoon, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem travels from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. Local scout troops march through the streets with drums and bagpipes, and the Patriarch is welcomed in Manger Square before he enters the church.

The afternoon and evening are about the atmosphere. In normal years there are choirs, a large Christmas tree and families out in the square. Streets around the square get crowded, and roads close to traffic, so getting in and out takes patience.

Late in the evening, people with entry passes line up for security and file into St. Catherine's Church. Everyone else finds a spot in the square. If you search for a Christmas Eve Bethlehem plan, this is the core of it: arrive early, stay warm, and expect to stand for hours.

Here is the rough order of the night:

  1. День: the Patriarch's procession and the scout parade reach Manger Square.
  2. Вечер: crowds build, there are Christmas songs in the square, and restaurants nearby fill up.
  3. Late evening: security checks for ticket holders at St. Catherine's Church.
  4. Midnight: the Mass is celebrated. At the end, a figure of the infant Jesus is carried in procession down to the Grotto of the Nativity.

Exact times are set by the churches each year and can change. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem publishes its Christmas program closer to the date.

Midnight Mass Bethlehem logistics: tickets, seats and the square

The service people call Midnight Mass Bethlehem takes place in St. Catherine's Church. This is the Catholic church run by the Franciscans, built right next to the ancient Church of the Nativity. It is not a large building, so seating is limited.

Entry passes for the inside are handed out in advance through church channels. Priority often goes to local parishes, clergy and organized pilgrim groups. If you want to try for a pass yourself, contact the Franciscan Christian Information Centre near Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem's Old City, opposite the Tower of David citadel and museum. Ask well before December and do not count on getting one.

Most visitors, including most of our guests, follow the Mass from Manger Square. In normal years the service is shown on large screens in the square, and you share the moment with thousands of people. Many guests tell us this is the part they remember most.

A few practical tips for the night:

  • Возьмите паспорт. You need it at the checkpoint, and security may ask for it.
  • Travel light. Large bags slow you down at security. A small bag with water and snacks is enough.
  • Dress warmly. Bethlehem sits in the hills, and December nights are cold and can be wet.
  • Plan your way home. Taxis are hard to find after midnight, and roads around the square are closed or jammed.

Manger Square and the sites to see around it

Manger Square is the heart of Christmas in Bethlehem. On one side is the Church of the Nativity. On the other is the Mosque of Omar, a reminder that Bethlehem is a mixed Christian and Muslim town.

Тур в Church of the Nativity visitor guide covers the church in detail. In short, you enter through the low Door of Humility, walk through the old basilica and go down to the Grotto, where a silver star marks the traditional birthplace of Jesus. The church and the pilgrimage route are a Объект Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО.

On Christmas Eve, expect the Grotto to be very busy or closed at times for services. If seeing it calmly matters to you, visit on another day of your trip. Other places worth your time include:

  • The Milk Grotto: a small chapel a short walk from the square, linked to the Holy Family.
  • Shepherds' Field in Beit Sahour: where tradition says the angels appeared to the shepherds.
  • Star Street: the old route pilgrims and the Patriarch follow into town.
  • Olive wood workshops: Bethlehem is known for hand-carved nativity sets, a meaningful gift to take home.

Наши complete guide to Bethlehem goes deeper into each of these sites, with tips for visiting outside the holiday rush.

Getting to Bethlehem for Christmas from Jerusalem

Almost everyone reaches Bethlehem from Jerusalem. The route crosses an Israeli checkpoint, and you need your passport. Tour buses usually cross without much trouble, but traffic on 24 December is heavy.

One rule surprises many people. Israeli law does not allow Israeli citizens to enter Bethlehem, which is in Area A under Palestinian Authority control. Our Bethlehem tours are for visitors traveling on foreign passports. If you hold Israeli citizenship, even with a second passport, ask us before you book.

If you go on your own, you can take a public bus or a taxi to the edge of town. The hard part is the return. After Midnight Mass, transport is scarce and the walk through the checkpoint can be long and cold. This is the main reason most travelers choose a guided Christmas Eve Bethlehem tour with hotel pickup and drop-off.

If you are staying in Tel Aviv or farther away, plan to sleep in Jerusalem on 24 December. Our Christmas Eve tour starts in Jerusalem with hotel pickup there. Guests coming from Eilat usually travel up to Jerusalem a day or two before.

Safety and current conditions

As of November 2026, the security situation in Israel and the West Bank can change quickly. Bethlehem has welcomed pilgrims through many difficult years, but conditions on a given day can affect roads, checkpoints and public events.

Before you book flights, read the official advice from your government. Good places to start are the US State Department travel advisory for Israel, the West Bank and Gaza and the UK Foreign Office travel advice. Check again in the week you travel.

We follow the situation daily because our own guides make these trips. If plans need to change, we will contact you directly. Also check that your travel insurance covers the West Bank, since some policies do not.

Планируем поездку на 2027 год

If you are planning Christmas in Bethlehem 2027, start early. Christmas Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, and Christmas Eve 2027 falls on a Friday. Jerusalem hotels fill up for Christmas week, so book your room as soon as your dates are set.

Tour prices, church schedules and entry rules shown here are current at the time of writing. They can change before 2027, so treat them as a guide and confirm the details when you book. For the church program, the Latin Patriarchate is the official source.

Pack for a long, cold night. Bring layers, a waterproof jacket, a warm hat and comfortable shoes for standing. Inside churches, cover your shoulders and knees. A scarf works well for both warmth and modesty.

Think about what else you want to see. Many guests spend Christmas Day calmly in Jerusalem, then head north to the sites of Jesus around the Sea of Galilee or south to the desert with a Masada and Dead Sea tour from Jerusalem. Browse our путеводителе по Израилю, Иордании и Египту for more ideas.
