Overview

Want to see the heart of the Holy City without planning a single step? This Jerusalem highlights tour collects you from your Tel Aviv hotel early in the morning and brings you to the sites people travel across the world to see, all with a licensed guide who knows every lane of the Old City. It runs on most days of the week, so it fits almost any Israel itinerary.

The day opens with the classic view over the walls from Mount Scopus, then follows the Kidron Valley past the Garden of Gethsemane to Mount Zion, home to King David's Tomb and the Room of the Last Supper. Inside the walls you cross all four quarters, walk the Byzantine Cardo, stand at the Western Wall and trace the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

This Jerusalem highlights tour is built for travelers who want the big picture in one well-paced day. Every Jerusalem highlights tour departure gives you time to take photos, ask questions and soak in the atmosphere, and the day ends with free time in the colorful Old City markets for spices, ceramics and olive wood gifts.

Pickup starts at 07:15 from central Tel Aviv hotels, with guiding in English and other languages on selected days. On Mondays and Thursdays the route visits Yad Vashem in place of some Mount Zion stops. Prefer a slower pace on fixed days? See our Jerusalem full day tour, add Bethlehem with the Jerusalem and Bethlehem tour, or book your own guide on a private Jerusalem tour.

Itinerary & route

Loading route map…

Numbers match the itinerary below. Solid lines are walking legs, dashed lines are drives. Map is for orientation only.

  1. 1
07:15 AMHotel pickup in Tel Aviv

Your guide and driver collect you from central Tel Aviv hotels starting at 07:15. We confirm the exact pickup time the evening before by WhatsApp or email. On the drive up through the Judean Hills your guide sets the scene for 3,000 years of Jerusalem history.

  2. 2
    09:00 AMMount Scopus panorama

Begin with the best wide view in the city. From Mount Scopus you see the walls of the UNESCO-listed Old City of Jerusalem, the golden Dome of the Rock and the Mount of Olives in one frame, and your guide explains how the city is laid out before you walk in.

  3. 3
09:40 AMGarden of Gethsemane and Church of All Nations

Walk among olive trees that have stood for centuries in the Garden of Gethsemane, where the Gospels say Jesus prayed on his last night. Next door, the Church of All Nations shelters the Rock of the Agony under a deep blue ceiling. On the way you look across the Kidron Valley at its ancient rock-cut tombs.

  4. 4
10:30 AMMount Zion: King David's Tomb and the Last Supper Room

Climb to Mount Zion, passing the Dormition Abbey, to visit the traditional King David's Tomb and the Cenacle, the upper room linked to the Last Supper. Mondays and Thursdays: the tour visits Yad Vashem instead of these Mount Zion sites and the Church of All Nations.

  5. 5
11:15 AMZion Gate and the Armenian Quarter

Enter the Old City through Zion Gate, a 500-year-old Ottoman gate still marked by the fighting of 1948, and stroll through the quiet lanes of the Armenian Quarter, one of the oldest Armenian communities outside Armenia.

  6. 6
11:45 AMThe Byzantine Cardo in the Jewish Quarter

Walk the excavated Cardo, the colonnaded main street of Byzantine Jerusalem, with its restored columns and shop niches set below today's street level.

  7. 7
    12:15 PMThe Western Wall

Spend time at the Western Wall, the last standing retaining wall of the Second Temple compound and Judaism's holiest place of prayer. You can approach the stones and leave a written note, a tradition kept for generations.

  8. 8
    01:00 PMLunch break

Stop for lunch in the Old City, where falafel, hummus and fresh grilled dishes are close at hand. Your guide recommends reliable spots nearby.

  9. 9
    02:00 PMVia Dolorosa

Follow the Via Dolorosa, the Way of Sorrows, through the Muslim and Christian Quarters, pausing at the Stations of the Cross while your guide tells the story behind each one.

  10. 10
02:45 PMChurch of the Holy Sepulchre

Finish the walking route at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built over Golgotha and the traditional tomb of Jesus. See the Stone of Anointing, the Calvary chapel and the Edicule. Want more time in the Christian sites? Look at our Christian Jerusalem tour.

  11. 11
03:30 PMFree time in the bazaar, then return

Browse the Old City market for spices, ceramics and souvenirs before heading back to Tel Aviv, with drop-off usually between 17:30 and 18:30 depending on traffic. Tomorrow, consider the Masada and Dead Sea tour.
