  • GuideEnglish
  • Group sizeUp to 15 travelers

Overview

This 5 day Nile cruise flies you from Cairo to Luxor and then sails you up the river to Aswan on a 5-star ship, with the great temples of ancient Egypt lined up along the way. You visit Karnak and Luxor Temple, three royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, the temples of Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae, and the Aswan High Dam with a licensed guide, and most of your meals are served on board.

Day 1 starts with an early flight from Cairo to Luxor, where you board the ship and tour Karnak and Luxor Temple in the afternoon. Day 2 crosses to the West Bank for the Valley of the Kings before the ship sails south past Esna to Edfu. Day 3 covers the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo on the way to Aswan, and day 4 brings the High Dam, Philae Temple and a felucca sail around the islands. On day 5 you check out and fly from Aswan back to Cairo.

The cruise suits first-time visitors to Egypt, history lovers, couples and families who want the highlights of Upper Egypt without packing and unpacking every night. Five days is a comfortable length: enough time to see the major temples at a relaxed pace, and short enough to pair with a few days in Cairo or a trip to Israel or Jordan. Because the ship is your hotel, this 5 day Nile cruise also takes the stress out of moving between sites.

Your domestic flights from Cairo to Luxor and from Aswan back to Cairo are part of the package, and you are met and assisted on arrival in Luxor. Book a shared cabin, priced per person for 2 to 5 travelers with a lower child rate, or a single cabin if you travel solo. The booking form shows the exact price for your cabin and travelers. The cruise departs on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, so check the calendar for open dates. Because the flights and the cruise are pre-paid, the 5 day Nile cruise is non-refundable. Numbers match the itinerary below. Solid lines are walking legs, dashed lines are drives. Map is for orientation only.

  1. Day 1Flight to Luxor and the East Bank
  2. 1
Early morningFlight from Cairo to Luxor

Your 5 day Nile cruise begins with an early morning flight from Cairo to Luxor. The day starts very early, and your exact meeting time is confirmed after booking. In Luxor you are met and assisted, then you check in to the ship in time for lunch on board.

  3. 2
    AfternoonKarnak and Luxor Temple

In the afternoon a qualified guide takes you to the East Bank. Karnak is a vast temple complex of pylons, obelisks and a forest of giant columns, while Luxor Temple stands in the middle of the modern city. Both are part of Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

  4. EveningDinner and overnight on the ship

Back on board, dinner is served and the evening continues with entertainment. You sleep in your cabin on the ship.

  5. Day 2Valley of the Kings and Sailing South
  6. 3
    MorningValley of the Kings

After breakfast on board you cross to the West Bank and the Theban Necropolis. In the Valley of the Kings you enter three royal tombs, cut deep into the rock and painted with scenes meant to guide the pharaohs through the afterlife.

  7. 4
MiddayLunch on board and sailing to Esna

You return to the ship for lunch as it sets sail south toward Esna. The afternoon is free, so relax on deck and watch the riverbanks drift by.

  8. 5
    AfternoonSailing on to Edfu

The ship continues upriver to Edfu, a small town on the west bank of the Nile. It is known locally for pottery making and sugar production.

  9. EveningDinner and entertainment on board

  12. 7
    AfternoonKom Ombo Temple

Lunch is served on board as the ship sails to Kom Ombo. The temple at Kom Ombo is unusual because it is shared by two gods, the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Haroeris, so many of its features come in pairs.

The ship sails on to Aswan while dinner is served. The evening is a galabeya party, where guests dress up in the traditional Egyptian robe. You sleep on board.

    Late morningTemple of Philae

Next is the Temple of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis and also honoring Hathor. It belongs to the Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

  17. 10
    AfternoonFelucca sail around the islands

In the afternoon you sail around the islands of Aswan on a felucca, the traditional Nile sailboat. It is a quiet, scenic way to end the touring part of the trip.
