Nazareth and Caesarea 2 Day Tour

  • Duration2 days
  • Starts07:15 AM, hotel pickup
  • GuideEnglish
  • Group sizeUp to 45 travelers
  • CancellationNon-refundable: this tour includes a pre-paid hotel night.

Overview

From Roman harbor ruins to the shores of the Sea of Galilee, this Nazareth and Caesarea 2 day tour shows you the north of Israel in two full, guided days. Day 1 follows the Mediterranean coast to Caesarea, Haifa, the sea grottoes of Rosh Hanikra and the Crusader city of Acre. Day 2 turns inland to Nazareth, Capernaum and the Jordan River, where you can be baptized if you wish.

On day 1 you drive up the coast past Herzliya and Netanya to Caesarea, Herod's showpiece port with its Roman theater and hippodrome. Next comes a stop in Haifa to see the Baha'i Shrine and its 19 garden terraces, then a cable car ride down into the white chalk grottoes at Rosh Hanikra, near the Lebanese border. You end the day inside the walls of Acre. Day 2 crosses the Jezreel Valley to Mount Precipice and the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth, then continues to Capernaum, Tabgha, the Sea of Galilee and the baptismal site of Yardenit.

This trip suits Christian pilgrims, history fans and travelers who want to see the north without renting a car. The coast and the Galilee are far apart, and trying to fit Caesarea, Acre, Rosh Hanikra and Nazareth into a single day would mean seeing most of it through a window. The Nazareth and Caesarea 2 day tour gives the coast and the Galilee a full day each, with a hotel night in between. You get time to walk the Roman ruins, explore the Crusader halls and sit by the lake where so much of the Gospel story took place.

Hotel pickup is at about 07:15 in Tel Aviv or about 06:00 in Jerusalem, and you are dropped back at your hotel on the evening of day 2. You spend 1 night in a tourist class hotel with breakfast, named on your voucher. Rooms sleep up to 2 adults, so choose a double or a single room, and you will see the per-person price for your date, room type and pickup city as you book. The package is non-refundable because the hotel night is pre-paid. Want to compare? See the Caesarea Haifa Acre tour, the Nazareth and Sea of Galilee day tour and the Christian Galilee tour. Then pick your date and book the Nazareth and Caesarea 2 day tour.

Numbers match the itinerary below. Solid lines are walking legs, dashed lines are drives. Map is for orientation only.

  1. Day 1Caesarea, Haifa, Rosh Hanikra and Acre
  2. 1
07:15 AMHotel pickup in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem

Your guide picks you up at your hotel in Tel Aviv at about 07:15. Jerusalem guests start earlier, at about 06:00, because the drive north is longer. Pickups can begin 30 to 60 minutes before the stated time, and the exact time is confirmed the day before. Bring your overnight bag, as you sleep at the tour hotel tonight.

  3. 2
    MorningRoman Caesarea

Drive up the Mediterranean coast past Herzliya and Netanya to Caesarea, the port city Herod built and named for the Roman emperor. Walk through gates, walls and rooms that sea sand protected for centuries. See the Roman theater that still hosts concerts, part of the hippodrome, and the temple platform that once looked over a busy trading harbor.

  4. 3
    Late morningBaha'i Gardens in Haifa

Continue north to Haifa for a view of the golden-domed Baha'i Shrine and its gardens on the slope of Mount Carmel. The Baha'i holy places are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nineteen terraces of flowers and clipped hedges step down the hill toward the city and the bay.

  5. 4
    MiddayRosh Hanikra sea grottoes

At the far northern end of Israel's coast, a cable car takes you down the white cliff to the Rosh Hanikra grottoes. Walk through tunnels and caves that the waves have carved into the soft limestone. On a sunny day the water inside glows a deep turquoise.

  6. 5
    AfternoonCrusader Acre

Head back south to the old walled city of Acre, the best preserved Crusader city in the country. People still live and trade in its ancient buildings and markets. See the massive sea walls and moat that even Napoleon could not break, the Crusader remains, the Ottoman-era prison and the gallows used under the British Mandate.

  7. EveningOvernight at your tourist class hotel

Your room for the night is in a tourist class hotel, shown on your booking voucher. The evening is free, and dinner is on your own. Breakfast is served in the morning before you head to the Galilee.

  8. Day 2Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee
  9. 6
    MorningJezreel Valley and Mount Precipice

After breakfast the route turns inland across the Jezreel Valley, the biblical Armageddon, with a view of ancient Megiddo. Climb to Mount Precipice, where Luke says an angry crowd tried to throw Jesus off the cliff. From the top you look out over the valley and toward Mount Tabor.

  10. 7
Late morningBasilica of the Annunciation, Nazareth

In Nazareth, visit the Basilica of the Annunciation, built where tradition says the angel Gabriel told Mary she would have a son. Next door is the Church of St. Joseph, on the site linked to Joseph's carpentry workshop. Leaving town, you pass Cana, where Jesus turned water into wine.

  11. 8
    MiddayCapernaum and Tabgha

Drive to the north shore of the Sea of Galilee, below the Mount of Beatitudes. At Capernaum you see the remains of the town where Jesus lived and taught, including the house of Peter. Nearby at Tabgha is the Church of the Multiplication, where the miracle of the loaves and fishes is remembered.

  12. 9
    AfternoonSea of Galilee and Yardenit

Follow the lake shore past Tiberias, with the Golan Heights rising across the water. At Yardenit, on the Jordan River near where it leaves the lake, you can take part in a baptism if you wish. Those who stay dry can simply watch from the riverbank.

  13. 10
EveningDrop-off at your hotel in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem

On the drive south, your guide points out Mount Tabor, the traditional site of the Transfiguration. You are dropped at your hotel in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem in the evening, depending on traffic.
