Christian Jerusalem and Bethlehem 2 Day Tour

  • Duration2 days
  • Starts07:15 AM, hotel pickup
  • GuideEnglish
  • Group sizeUp to 45 travelers
  • CancellationNon-refundable: this tour includes a pre-paid hotel night.

Overview

From the grotto where Jesus was born to the tomb where he was laid, this Christian Jerusalem and Bethlehem 2 day tour walks you through the whole Gospel story. Day 1 pairs the Old City of Jerusalem with the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Day 2 follows the final days of Jesus from the Mount of Olives to the Via Dolorosa, with a licensed English-speaking guide by your side the whole way.

On day 1 you look over Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, walk the Byzantine Cardo, visit the Western Wall and follow the Stations of the Cross to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. After a stroll through the Old City bazaars, you cross to Bethlehem for Manger Square, the Church of the Nativity, St. Catherine's Church and Shepherds' Field. Day 2 climbs back up the Mount of Olives for the Chapel of the Ascension and the Pater Noster church, then walks down past Dominus Flevit to Gethsemane, the Pools of Bethesda and the Lithostrotos.

The Christian Jerusalem and Bethlehem 2 day tour is a natural fit for pilgrims, church groups and families who want to see both the birthplace and the tomb of Jesus without a frantic schedule. Bethlehem is close to Jerusalem, but checkpoints and crowds at the Nativity can slow any visit. With two days, you do not have to choose between Bethlehem and the Mount of Olives, and there is still time to sing a Christmas carol in the caves under St. Catherine's.

We pick you up at your hotel in Tel Aviv (around 07:15) or Jerusalem (around 08:30) and bring you back at the end of day 2. Your night is in a tourist class hotel with breakfast, named on your voucher. Seats on the Christian Jerusalem and Bethlehem 2 day tour are priced per person by room type, double, triple or single, and the booking form shows the exact price for your date and pickup city. The package is non-refundable because the hotel night is pre-paid. Want a shorter version? Itinerary & route

Loading route map…

Numbers match the itinerary below. Solid lines are walking legs, dashed lines are drives. Map is for orientation only.

  1. Day 1Jerusalem's Old City and Bethlehem
  2. 1
    07:15 AMPickup from your hotel

Your guide collects you from your Tel Aviv hotel at around 07:15, or from your Jerusalem hotel at around 08:30. Be ready in the lobby up to an hour early, since pickups can start 30 to 60 minutes ahead. We confirm your exact time the day before.

  3. 2
MorningMount of Olives and the Kidron Valley

The first stop is a lookout over the ancient Jewish cemetery, where tradition says the resurrection will begin. From here you see the Old City and the Temple Mount. Driving down, you pass the Garden of Gethsemane, the Church of All Nations and the rock-cut tombs of the Kidron Valley, including the Tomb of Absalom.

  4. 3
Late morningArmenian Quarter, the Cardo and the Western Wall

Step through Zion Gate into the Old City of Jerusalem and cross the quiet Armenian Quarter. A section of the Byzantine Cardo, the city's main street 1,500 years ago, now hosts shops under its arches. Continue through the Jewish Quarter to the Western Wall, the most sacred place of prayer in Judaism.

  5. 4
MiddayStations of the Cross and the Holy Sepulchre

Walk the Via Dolorosa and stop at several Stations of the Cross, just as thousands of pilgrims do each year. The route ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Christians honor the site of the crucifixion and the empty tomb. Afterward you wander through the bazaars of the Christian and Muslim Quarters before driving to Bethlehem.

  6. 5
AfternoonManger Square and the Church of the Nativity

In Bethlehem, you bend through a low doorway into the 4th century Church of the Nativity, one of the oldest churches still in daily use. Below it, a silver star in the Grotto of the Nativity marks the traditional spot where Jesus was born. Crowds sometimes make it impossible to go down into the grotto, so your guide will tell you on the day. Next door, St. Catherine's Church leads to the caves where St. Jerome translated the Bible into Latin.

  7. 6
    Late afternoonShepherds' Field

End the day at Shepherds' Field, where the angel announced the birth of Jesus to shepherds watching their flocks. The small Church of the Angels, designed by Antonio Barluzzi, tells the Christmas story in bright panels. On the way back you pass the Field of Ruth, linked to Ruth and Boaz.

  8. EveningOvernight at your tourist class hotel

Settle into your tourist class hotel, which is listed on your booking voucher. The rest of the evening is free for dinner on your own or an early night. Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before you set out on day 2.

  9. Day 2Mount of Olives to the Via Dolorosa
  10. 7
    MorningAscension and the Lord's Prayer

Day 2 opens at the top of the Mount of Olives with the Chapel of the Ascension, where a rock is said to show the footprint of Jesus. A short walk away, the Church of the Pater Noster covers its walls with the Lord's Prayer in over 100 languages. You also see the Crusader cloister and the grotto where Jesus is said to have taught his disciples.

  11. 8
    Mid-morningDominus Flevit

Head down the slope to Dominus Flevit, the small chapel shaped like a teardrop. It marks where Jesus wept as he foresaw the fall of Jerusalem. The window behind the altar looks straight across to the Temple Mount.

  12. 9
Late morningGethsemane and the Church of All Nations

In the garden of Gethsemane, ancient olive trees grow beside the Church of All Nations, where Jesus prayed before his arrest. Look up at the ceiling, decorated with the emblems of the countries that helped pay for it, and at the bright mosaic above the entrance.

  13. 10
AfternoonBethesda, St. Anne and the Lithostrotos

Enter through Lions' Gate to see the Pools of Bethesda and the Crusader Church of St. Anne, linked by tradition to the birth of Mary. Beneath the Convent of the Sisters of Zion, you see a Second Temple era cistern and Roman flagstones where many believe Pilate judged Jesus. Then walk the Way of the Cross through the Old City.

  14. 11
EveningReturn to Tel Aviv or Jerusalem

After the last stop, the air-conditioned vehicle takes you back to your hotel in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. You go home having seen the places of both the first Christmas and the first Easter.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Christian Jerusalem and Bethlehem 2 day tour cost?

The price is per person and depends on your room type. A double room is for 2 or more travelers, a triple room for 3 or more, and a single room for solo travelers or anyone who wants a private room. Children pay the same rate as adults, since there is one price category. The booking form shows the exact price for your chosen date, room and pickup city. It includes hotel pickup and drop-off, your guide, an air-conditioned vehicle, one hotel night and breakfast.

Where can I be picked up?

We pick up from hotels in Tel Aviv, usually around 07:15, and from hotels in Jerusalem, usually around 08:30. Select your city when booking. Pickups may begin 30 to 60 minutes early, and the exact time is confirmed the day before.

Which hotel is included?

The package includes one night in a tourist class hotel with breakfast. You will find the hotel details on your booking voucher.

Is the tour refundable?

No. The hotel night is pre-paid, so the package cannot be refunded after booking. If you need a different date, contact us and we will try to change it for you, subject to availability.

On which days can I book this tour?

Right now the tour departs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Look at the booking calendar to see which dates are open.

Why do I need my passport in Bethlehem?

Bethlehem is in the West Bank, and you pass through checkpoints on the way in and out. Carry a valid passport on both days. Israeli citizens may face entry restrictions in Palestinian Authority areas, so please contact us before booking. For churches and the Western Wall, wear clothes that cover your knees and shoulders. Shorts are not allowed.

Can I always go down into the Grotto of the Nativity?

Not always. On busy days the line for the grotto can be very long, and visits are sometimes not possible. Your guide will make the call on the day and still show you the rest of the church, St. Catherine's and the caves of St. Jerome.

Is there a lot of walking?

Plan on moderate walking on both days. Old City streets are uneven stone with many steps, and the path down the Mount of Olives is steep. If you can walk for a few hours with short breaks, you will be fine.

Is the tour suitable for kids, and are meals included?

The tour is not suitable for children under 4. Children 4 and up are welcome and pay the adult rate. Only breakfast on day 2 is included. Lunch, dinner and drinks are at your own cost.

What should I bring?

Your passport, comfortable shoes, sun protection, water and a scarf or shawl for church visits. Pack light for the night, and bring some cash for lunch, souvenirs in Bethlehem and tips.
