Mount Nebo is the hilltop in Jordan where, according to the Bible, Moses looked out over the Promised Land before he died. Today it holds the Memorial Church of Moses, early Christian mosaics and a wide view over the Dead Sea and the Jordan Valley. Most travelers spend about an hour there and pair it with the mosaic town of Madaba and a Dead Sea swim on the same day from Amman.

What is Mount Nebo and why does it matter?
In the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses climbs Mount Nebo at the end of the 40 years in the desert. From the top, God shows him the land his people will enter. Moses dies there, and the text says no one knows where he was buried.
That story made the hill a pilgrimage site very early. By the 4th century, Christians had built a small church on the western peak, known as Siyagha. Over the next two centuries it grew into a monastery with fine floor mosaics.
The Franciscans acquired the site in 1933 and began excavating it. They still look after it today. Pope John Paul II visited in 2000 and Pope Benedict XVI in 2009, and the memorial church reopened in 2016 after a long restoration. You can read more background on the Mount Nebo Wikipedia page.
Mount Nebo matters to Jews, Christians and Muslims, since Moses is honored in all three traditions. You will see church groups singing, families on day trips and travelers who simply come for the view.
What to see at Mount Nebo, Jordan
The site is compact. You walk a short paved path from the entrance to the church and the viewing terrace. Most of what you came for sits within a few minutes of each other.
The Memorial Church of Moses
The modern church is built over the remains of the Byzantine church and protects its mosaics. The highlight is a 6th century floor mosaic with hunters, shepherds and animals, including lions, zebras and camels. It is one of the best preserved mosaic floors in Jordan.
This is an active place of worship. Keep your voice low, and wait if a group is holding a service. Ask your guide before taking photos during a Mass.
The viewpoint over the Promised Land
The terrace in front of the church is why most people come. On a clear day, you look down over the Dead Sea, the Jordan Valley and the oasis of Jericho. On very clear days, you may even spot the towers of Jerusalem on the far ridge.
A stone marker on the terrace points to places in the view. Haze is common, especially in summer, so do not be disappointed if the far side is soft. Even then, the drop to the valley floor is a powerful sight.
The Brazen Serpent sculpture
Next to the terrace stands a tall bronze cross wrapped by a serpent, by the Italian artist Giovanni Fantoni. It recalls the bronze serpent Moses raised in the desert in the Book of Numbers, and the cross of Jesus in the Gospel of John. It is the most photographed spot on Mount Nebo.
The memorial stones and olive tree
Near the church, look for the stone that marks the visit of Pope John Paul II and the olive tree linked to that visit. There is also a small display that explains the excavations. Give yourself ten minutes here if you like history.
Madaba and Mount Nebo: how to see both in one visit
Madaba and Mount Nebo are close neighbors, so almost every tour and driver pairs them. Madaba is a friendly town known as the City of Mosaics. It is a short drive from the mountain, so you can easily see both in a morning.
The Madaba Map in St George's Church
The famous Madaba Map is a 6th century mosaic on the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St George. It shows the Holy Land, from the Jordan River to the Nile Delta, with Jerusalem in the center. It is the oldest surviving original map of the region.
Look for the walled city of Jerusalem, its main street with columns and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Your guide will point out Jericho, the Dead Sea with fish swimming away from the salt, and the boats on it. A small ticket is charged at the church and can change.
Mosaic workshops and lunch
Madaba still has workshops where artists make mosaics by hand. Watching them work is a good way to understand the ancient floors you just saw. If you want to buy one, ask about shipping before you pay.
Madaba is also a good lunch stop. Many restaurants serve mezze, grilled meats and, on some days, mansaf. Our guide to Jordanian food and the dishes worth traveling for tells you what to order.
Which order is best?
We usually go to Mount Nebo first, while the morning air is clearer. Then we drive into Madaba for the map and lunch. If you start late, flip the order and catch the softer evening light on the mountain.
Combining Mount Nebo with the Dead Sea from Amman
From Mount Nebo, the road drops down to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on land. That makes it easy to build a full day from Amman around Madaba, the mountain and a float in the salty water.
Here is the day plan our guides use most often:
- Early morning: leave Amman after breakfast and drive to Madaba.
- Mid morning: see the Madaba Map and walk the old center.
- Late morning: continue to Mount Nebo for the church, mosaics and view.
- Lunch: eat in Madaba or at a resort on the Dead Sea shore.
- Afternoon: float in the Dead Sea at a resort or public beach with showers.
- Evening: drive back to Amman.
Christian travelers often add the Baptism Site on the Jordan River, Bethany Beyond the Jordan, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site in the same valley. If you add it, you will need to skip something or start very early.
For the Dead Sea part, bring a towel and water shoes, and avoid shaving the day before. Our guide to Dead Sea mud, its benefits and how to use it explains how to enjoy the mud safely.
Visiting Mount Nebo from Israel
Many of our guests come from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem or Eilat. You cannot easily do Mount Nebo as a quick day trip from Israel, because the border process takes time. A multi-day Jordan tour that crosses the border and already includes Madaba and Mount Nebo is the easiest option.

Practical tips for visiting Mount Nebo
Dress code
Mount Nebo is a working church site. Cover your shoulders and knees, for both men and women. A light scarf is handy for the church, and you can take it off for the Dead Sea later.
What to bring
- A light jacket, since the hilltop is often windy and cooler than the Dead Sea below.
- Sunscreen, a hat and water, as there is little shade on the terrace.
- Comfortable shoes for the sloped paths.
- Some Jordanian dinars for tickets, drinks and small purchases.
- Your passport, which you need for border crossings and hotels.
Walking and accessibility
The main paths are short and mostly paved, with a gentle slope. Most travelers with average fitness manage easily. If you use a wheelchair or walk with difficulty, tell us when you book so we can plan the stop.
Photography
The best photos are from the terrace and beside the Brazen Serpent. Shoot early for clearer air. Inside the church, follow any signs about photos and never use flash on worshippers.
